We are United against discrimination, injustice and suffering. We believe in equality, fairness and compassion for all.
In honour of George Floyd, who was brutally murdered in an act of police brutality in the United States, protests and riots have broken out worldwide in effort to end the clear discrimination. In light of this, we felt it necessary to share how it all started & where the Black Lives Matter movement comes from.
What is Black Lives Matter?
Black Lives Matter is an ideological and political intervention in a world where Black lives are systematically and intentionally targeted for demise.
Black Lives Matter is an international human rights movement, originating from the African-American community within the United States. Black Lives Matter is built upon campaigns against violence and racism towards black people.
How did it all start?
Racism, violence and inequality against black people has been happening for an extremely long time and it is an embarrassment these characteristics are still prominent in today’s societies across the world. Black Lives Matter originally formed in 2013 with three members - Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors and Opal Tometi - in response to the murder of Trayvon Martins murder.
What can you do to help?
- Donate to causes that need funding such as Black Visions Collective, Black Lives Matter, and the Official George Floyd Memorial Fund
- Show up to a Black Lives Matter protest. However, We do not encourage, condone or support any violence, destruction or looting.
- Sign a petition.
- Show solidarity on Social Media.
- Support black creators and black business owners.
We are all one. Racism and discrimination has no place in our world.
